Union Berlin secured all three points against Mainz 05 on Sunday afternoon as they defeated the visitors by a scoreline of 2-0. The match was a much-needed victory for Union Berlin, who had struggled to find their form this season. In the first half, both teams were evenly matched but it was Union Berlin who took the lead through a goal from midfielder Christian Becker. The former Borussia Dortmund player showed great skill and pace in the final third before slotting home from close range. Mainz 05 responded well to their early setback, creating some good chances of their own. However, it was Union Berlin who doubled their advantage just after halftime when defender Florian Knoche scored his first goal since joining the club in January. The former Bayern Munich player showed excellent composure and power to head home from a tight angle. The second goal came late on as Union Berlin wrapped up the win. Another header from Knoche ensured that he would have been happy with his performance throughout the game. Overall, it was a solid display from Union Berlin who now move into fourth place in the Bundesliga table. They will be looking to continue their winning ways in their next match against fellow strugglers Schalke 04. |
